A Monster Calls is a movie based on Patrick Ness' beautiful book, directed by J. A. Bayona, released in 2016.
I worked together with Glassworks Barcelona's talented team, headed by Javier Verdugo who produced two animated sequences directed and designed by Headless' Adrian Garcia.
I helped animate The Tale of the Prince: my role was to create layouts, think about colours and render and composit my shots for final delivery.
3D camera movements were laid out in 3D and sequences rendered using Arnold. All compositing was done in After Effects relying heavily on UV passes for texture placement.
It was a challenging process, mostly because of the number of textures we layered, but I think the it was all the effort!
It was ofter challenging to turn the sequences around simply because of the number of frames! The tales don't cut, they are continuously flowing and this posed a challenge when handling the transitions between the scenes.
